The World Cannot Hold – a poem by Paul Vincent Cannon

#2022 November PAD Chapbook Challenge

Day 13 13.11.22

Prompt: Write an ekphrastic poem. I chose ‘Evening, Melancholy 1’ by Edvard Munch

The World Cannot Hold

I wonder,
was it the second dram or my under mood,
who knows, empiricism be damned,
this creeping darkness has me by
the thinness of my tender throat,
and I cannot make the sounds of words
necessary for the expected divination
that would lift the melan wide,
returning me to myself,
why so fast, perhaps, and I think
it's true, the world cannot hold much
melancholia to itself, but I would
like to sit with it for a while.
