The Question – a poem by Paul Vincent Cannon

“No human being, however great or powerful, was ever so free as a fish.” John Ruskin

The Question

The question formed in my mind,
do fish ever swim backwards,
but I guessed it to be true enough,
for what can go forwards
can surely go backwards,
humans do it so well,
and a new question formed,
do the scales of a fish prise open
as they swim backwards?
And I wondered, naturally,
how this might feel.

“Curious things, habits.” Agatha Christie

The Question

Does it bring life,
this thing that you do,
the habit of a lifetime,
week in, week out,
which has quietly
formed so much of
who you are and your
understanding of the
world and the meaning
of your being, without
even thinking about its
sum and parts, does it
bring life?

“I seem to have run in a great circle, and met myself again on the starting line.” Jeanette Winterson

The Question

And, so it begins,
I buy myself in order to be myself,
that I might become a symbol of me,
some utopian project where stories
abound with the courage of hopelessness,
and the maelstrom of warlords in my
mind, private pathologies irrupting,
ever renewed, the punch line obscure
and, finally, the question,
how might it end.

“I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to se me.” Ralph Ellison

The Question

When did someone last
speak to you in sounds of love,
with eyes of invitation
and tones of welcome
that broke the dam of your
invisibility that overwhelms,
when did you last tell your
story outside of yourself to
a world of someone who
listened to your deep?
