The Piper

The piper rose
while the gathered,
unaware of how he
would rattle their hearts,
remained somnambulant
in reflection,
someone coughed and
attention gained a moment,
then the piper struck
a sombre note
and as one the gathered rose
as the sonorous sound of
Amazing Grace
consumed our hearts
with waves of melancholy
reverberating
rattling,
shaking,
as we plunged young Tom
into the ground
that could we
we would warm,
and just as suddenly as
the sound had come,
it ceased,
while yet our bodies
quavered.
