Peril On The High Table – a poem by Paul Vincent Cannon

#2022 November PAD Chapbook Challenge

Day 5 5.11.22

Prompt: Write a peril poem.

Peril On The High Table

The velvet table top stained with guilt
supported well by those legs of time,
croupiers delight, while
a hand of desperation sweats,
beady eyes starring back intensly,
I have five straight,
not four of a kind,
what if someone has a flush,
if not, will I spot the bluff,
if not, I will lose everything,
my four friends are a kindly risk,
so not that quarter,
my real danger lies within.
