This Once Warrior

Her hand rested on his cheek
while she searched his face
not knowing how to approach
such cruel intimacy,
this once warrior
now spent
his sallow skin a mask,
a pale representation,
as he lay in quiet repose
already emptied of himself,
and in that moment
sadness washed over her
and a deep keening began
and remained
on her lips
until
she was wrung out
and dried
to a whisper.
