This Once Warrior – a poem by Paul Vincent Cannon

Keen – Word of the Day

This Once Warrior

Her hand rested on his cheek
while she searched his face
not knowing how to approach
such cruel intimacy,
this once warrior
now spent
his sallow skin a mask,
a pale representation,
as he lay in quiet repose
already emptied of himself,
and in that moment
sadness washed over her
and a deep keening began
and remained
on her lips
she was wrung out
and dried
to a whisper.
