“There is scarcely any passion without struggle.”   Albert Camus ‘The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays.’

When The Chips Were Down

We reminisced over dinner
of all that we were and
of all that we are,
the places we’d been
people who’d come into our lives,
some who’d stayed
even at the fringes of our story,
those parenting years,
competing debt and dream cycles,
disappointments and celebrations,
there’ve been some very tough times
and yet, when the chips were down
we always came through and
we often say,
that’s what makes us.

Note: The saying “When the chips are down” was a poker term meaning your chips or tokens were so reduced that you were at risk of losing the game.
