The Window Is Not A Window – a poem by Paul Vincent Cannon

“Art is not a reflection of reality, it is the reality of a reflection.” Jean-Luc Goddard

The Window Is Not A Window

When the window is not a window
but, in fact a mirror,
though not a mirror;
I see reflections, and yet,
in the same moment,
I can see through while
seeing everything reflected.

Don't tell me about the physics,
I know the physics,
it's not that (even though it is that),
what captures me is the overlay,
there I am superimposed
with the sunset, the garden,
I am sitting with trees,
I am flying in clouds,
everything all at once.

  1. This is wonderful. It reminds me of the other night, I plugged in the string lights in our mudroom, and my youngest (he’s 2) was mesmerized. He went out to see them and started pointing out the windows, the door, anything glass, saying “there’s more lights outside!” Then I was mesmerized. Children aren’t limited by physics or beliefs.❤️✨

  2. (These lights outside were the reflections of the lights inside, but to him all he saw was lights.)

  3. Yes, true
A window is not a window… I liked the title, with lots of hidden meanings.
