dVerse Poets – Poetics – The Landscape Sleeps, Ekphrastic Prompt

I have chosen to work with John Atkinson Grimshaw’s ‘A November Morning’

“There is harmony in autumn, and a lustre in the sky ….” Percy Bysshe Shelley

A Mere Sequence

Autumn strips me bare,
my body crisp and cool,
like my footfall on a cinder lane
as I jar along the road of bones,
a calendar of seasons,
now arrested in dapple
for the briefest fleet,
a mere sequence in the scheme
unknown to mortals,
evidenced only by the falling leaves
who whisper until I notice that
nothing is permanent and,
how light I am.

Excellent writing Paul, you not only captured the image, but I think you carried through nicely on the Shelly quote.

  5. “as I jar along the road of bones” Chilling lines, I read this poem several times trying to interpret it. I assume you are speaking of the trees and leaves but it is so metaphoric and I would hate to put this piece in a box.

Nice write you have here ❤

    • thank you for engaging so deeply with this. It is indeed a metaphor and could work as metaphor just for the trees as stark reminders of autumn, or that there is some deeper sense in me (I know it to be the latter of course, feelings are such good barometers aren’t they?) Change, thwarted ego, disillusionment, but it wasn’t a darkness or oppressive, just a noticing. I can only say it fell on me as a poem, I was in a very contemplative space that day so that would be it. Really appreciate your comment. 😊
