Patriarchal Madness – a poem by Paul Vincent Cannon

“When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross.” Sinclair Lewis

Patriarchal Madness

America the weird,
your beauty fades to ash,
a sickness rules your land,
emancipation's dead and gone,
no one matter's unless you're
hetero, male and lustre white,
no further pretence of
separation, now a veiled
leer of legalese, deliberately
obscuring any path to freedom,
the Joker is your new reveal,
a dance of death is now begun,
you want your children stupid,
and make your women chattels,
your favourite toys are killers
like your warped religious views,
your mouths are open graves and
you speak of god in pentagrams,
while your morals are carved of blood,
and your unseemly rush to Salem
will consume your generations in
fiery piles of your patriarchal wrath.

  1. These jump out at me:
    “you want your children stupid,
    and make your women chattels,
    your favourite toys are killers”

It is a disease and we are all being sickened by it. I’m sure there are other countries who are waiting in the wings to step in and take over. When politicians’ new MO is to keep the population polarized how will we be able to stand against it. I was talking with my older son yesterday and when he responded half of the population is happy with how things are unfolding it made me want to flee. Not sure what would be worse, staying in this seething cauldron of idiocy or leaving and watching it implode from a distance…

    • Yes, what to do. To go invites a vulnerability to similar events further down the trail. In our recent federal election voters eschewed the growing christian candidacies because they were pro-life, anti-environment (science), and wanting christian values (whose/which ones?) implemented. They are complete nuts. We talked about the possibility of going to NZ if things got bad, but that is temporarily not a thing for us now. Yes, so polarised – I cannot believe it has come to that, but there it is. I know people were angry with Hillary, but they ignored her warnings! I nearly didn’t post this, it is a less vulgar version, but I’m as mad as hell.

  2. Well said, Paul!
Hope some of your fellow males don’t disown you for daring to apparently dis those who prefer to do the dissing.

    • I nearly didn’t post it, but this is a less vulgar version that might have erupted badly, willing to take the flack Pat – more likely on Twitter, most people on my feed in here are not that sort. Many thanks for your encouraging words.

      • I really like this version and glad you found a way to write about it.I wrote about the recent Supreme Court decision and had a white male accuse me of marginalizing white males and why didn’t I also marginalize other groups? I tried to explain that no group likes to marginalized. Two other white males liked his first comment and one of them asked a similar question, but in a less hostile manner. I expanded the answer that no group likes to be marginalized. Commenter one doubled down so I blocked his second comment as he seemed more to be looking for a fight than a discussion. I have only done that to one other person who started to demand his rights to comment on my blog when I suggested that his response might be more suitable as an entire post on his own blog.

      • Men are so weak at times, insecure, ego bound, they always seem to need approval, out of place in an equal culture. Goon on you for blocking, arguing is never easy, but especially when it bears no fruit. No one has a right to comment on someone else’s blog, it is a privilege we share. I like your way Pat.

      • I stopped Twitter a few years ago but sometimes like today when researching a candidate, there were some tweets from there I agreed with: Ruben Gal…

All of the “pro-life” politicians voted against
the Child Tax Credit and our baby formula bill
They don’t care about life, they care about
        control.
We will fight back. This is far from over.

In 1869, Congress set the number of Supreme
Court justices at 9 to align with the fact that
        there were 9 circuit courts.
There are now 13 circuit courts.

Paul has clarified so well the vague thoughts of disgust and outrage that have been swimming in my head lately. He’s an excellent poet on many topics; I recommend that you check out his site if you already haven’t.

  14. Paul, this is such a powerful poem. Your word choice is superb. I particularly liked:
    your favourite toys are killers
    your mouths are open graves
your morals are carved of blood,
the rush to Salem(‘s) fiery piles of your patriarchal wrath
I particularly liked the last one because it links the misogamy of the Salem witch trials to the SCOTUS ruling. I think the link works. I reblogged, I hope you don’t mind. I would also like to share this with my writer’s group if you don’t mind.

  16. Ah dystopian movies and series like the grand Soylent Green. Planet of the Apes. And of course Handmaids Tale. Prior to this it was Malthusian and tech solved that issue. They’ve been predicting the demise of man throughout history.

  17. Yes indeed. Malthus thought we couldn’t increase crop yields. Oh he was so wrong. Just look at how technology has advanced just since WW 2. The leading device from that era was a Bell Labs invention called the transistor. Big chunky thing now they’re measured in nanometers. Just count up the tech in one’s home count the CPUs. Just around me right now I count 12 with billions of transistors. It’s changed everything from medicine, retail, offices, farming and cars. Take the car we’ve pushed ic engines to the point 4 cylinders can propel an s.u.v to over 100mph.
