What Was Missed? – a poem by Paul Vincent Cannon

“Keep your eyes wide open.” Haruki Murakami

What Was Missed?

I feel for those who grieve certainty,
even more those whose fear drives them
to overcome the unease of insecurity,
searching for gravity, seeking maps of
hope, direction in finding, making meaning,
looking for the vending gods who can be
summoned cheaply to assuage, until there is
no meaning and life speeds past in all its
ineluctable mess until the final door,
when they suddenly realise what has
been missed.

  1. Paul, that reminds me of a button I picked up at the Ai Weiwei exhibit in Grand Rapids a few years ago, with this picture on it:

  6. Certainty? What on earth is that?
    (Camus commented on that…)
    Have a nice week-end Paul.

      • Thank you Paul. We are. The rainy season is a bit late actually, so it is much warmer than usual. t’s all right. Will be raining cats and dogs in a fortnight probably.
Unrelated question: do you ever go back to Nottingham at all? Once in a blue moon?

      • No, I have never returned to the old dart (UK) not even a blue moon.

      • Is that right? True, it is a fair distance away. But have you never had the curiosity? (You would have a shock I’m sure…)
Going to London second week of July. Look forward to it.
        Cheers mate.

      • I have family who send evidence, photo’s videos etc, it’s all so different, though the street I grew up in hasn’t changed much the town has, but I used to refer to it as the black whole of Europe, who would want to live there? They can’t cook, can’t play the games they initiated, destroyed their own industry and turned their backs on former colonies, I was not inclined, lol. I’m sure you will grace us with a wonderful tale of your trip? I hope so.

      • I understand. Sometimes there is no need to go back. I’ve lived in so many “half-shitty” countries, I tended to look at France and Europe as a beacon of stability. But they are all becoming stupider and stupider every year… Heart-breaking really.
But I will indeed “grace” you with tales from the (Frog) pond…
