The Theocrats Are Here – a poem by Paul Vincent Cannon

“There’s something rotten in the state of America” could be a line from a modern Shakespeare.

“Theocracy is the worst of all governments.” C.S. Lewis

The Theocrats Are Here

There's a sickness in the land,
the gods of vengeance masquerade
as righteous lovers of goodness,
but their wolfish snouts peek out
from beneath their sheepish skins
for all to see, though sadly, too late
for reversals, now judgements scour
the land as to who owns women's
bodies, the divinity of children,
the evil of colour that is not white,
where you park a penis (even never),
whether to murder in the name of
justice - electric, gas or juice,
there's a sickness in the land,
there's no rash or temperature,
it's a handgun and an AR-15.

Note: C.S. Lewis’ quote goes on to say (profoundly) that “If we must have a tyrant, a robber baron is far better than an inquisitor. The baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity at some point be sated; and since he dimly knows he is doing wrong he may possibly repent. But the inquisitor who mistakes his own cruelty and lust of power and fear for the voice of Heaven will torment us infinitely because he torments us with the approval of his own conscience and his better impulses appear to him as temptations.”

  1. A powerful calling out of the atrocities that continue on and on.
I think your C.S. Lewis quote is so true!

  4. We get the government we deserve. This system didn’t build and doesn’t sustain itself. The haves like their stuff and the robber barons will continue to rule via their lackeys on the ground. The day the lackeys wake up and realize that they have far more in common with the little people than the barons is the day of our liberation from the tyranny. When the guns turn, we will be free. (Until the next despot takes the helm.)

  6. I’m at a loss to understand all the positive engagement with this poem. I understand the ideas but do not feel them, am not taken on the roads of language to a better place. I’m taken to judgment and recycle, I mean, judge those people! and let the time spirit write your words on so many lips today. What’s the cause of the sickness, or, what really is the sickness? And has it infected single person, even you? http://harms-end.com/2022/10/14/listen-to-your-neighbor/

  7. Yes, but I’m working on getting better at human relations, as I see I have a lot of room for improvement, even though I’ve learned to throw out hate. How about you?
