The Violence Of The Puppets – a poem by Paul Vincent Cannon

“No woman can call herself free who does not control her own body.” Margaret Sanger

For Brittany Poolaw a 21 year old who was sentenced on October 6 to four years imprisonment in Texas for what is deemed to be a first degree manslaughter conviction for miscarrying her fetus. (You can’t make this stuff up!)

The Violence Of The Puppets

Glass ceiling,
rape,
murder,
assault,
domestic violence (which is not very),
all pale (just a little, in the moment) next
to the violence of the puppets pulled by
religious manias, twisted science,
all criminalising wombs,
perversely destroying all who would
dare to choose their own path,
claiming god as if god (as if) were
entirely ignorant by dint of a
cultural choice ceding power to a
gaggle of goons ironically seeking
the very murder they say (disingenuously)
that they abhor.

  1. Paul, my 2 daughters live in Texas. I always said that if something ever happened to Robert, I would move to Texas. As time passes, that option seems less and less appealing! I think that the supreme court may intervene in Texas abortion laws, and this case may be overturned. I hope so! ❤ Your well-written poem calls attention to a ludicrous and unjust law!

  2. Very powerful and hard hitting, Paul. Whose interests do religious bodies and laws safeguard! If god needs their help, I am quite happy not to believe in god.

  8. Brilliant, Paul. Fetal life seems to be more prescious to some than anyone already born.

  12. Texas is just so disgusting. I’d write that I can’t believe what’s happening there, but nothing surprises me anymore. You have captured it perfectly…
