Nature Smiles – a poem by Paul Vincent Cannon

Photo: looking from the back wall of one former pub to another. Ruins at Kookynie, a former gold-rush town once boasting a mayor and council, and 10, 000 people and seven pubs.

“What’s old collapses, times change, and new life blossoms in the ruins.” Friedrich Schiller

Nature Smiles

The soft ghosts of landscapes clutch longingly
at our feet, seeking to pull us in, desiring our
hearts be held in this place in reverence less
seen, even neglected, now populated by the
ruins of past dreams faded with the stretch of
time, no longer elastic in this brittle earth where
moisture cannot abide, where hope recedes
like a recoil, and all the while nature smiles at
our dogged attempts to take charge, patiently
waiting for the penny to drop.

  1. Photos are very interesting showing what settlers utilized for housing and buildings and the needed simplicity

    • Such a different era. When the gold rush fizzled, the community almost completely vanished and many buildings fell into disrepair, but the handful that remained utilised the building materials to create or repair homes, so continuing that theme.

  2. Fantastic, Paul – I assume the photo inspired this piece? You were there?

    • This was a bit of mix on that score. Normally I write the poem then labour over trying to find a relevant image, but with this one as I started to form the frame of it, I knew exactly which image I had in my collection and that drove it home. Thank you david and, thank you for asking.

  3. A lovely poem, Paul and the photo said it all. This is life where all things have to end and restart again. Once populated and today in ruins.

  5. So many good metaphors in this one! Ghost towns in northern Vermont and New Hampshire are hard to find because the forest recaims the land. Stone walls and cellar holes are all that’s left.
