Mind The Gap – a poem by Paul Vincent Cannon

“An imbalance between rich and poor is the oldest and most fatal ailment of all republics.” Plutarch

Mind The Gap

Herald of bad tidings,
grimy sloth, slippery
grease slime money bag
of hypocrisy and venality
belonging to that
self-impregnating
cabalistic horde who sold
their souls while like dogs
in heat for the lusted
promise of one more
crooked dollar to feverishly
snatch from the hope of
lives devalued, being left
to deconstruct their love
in abject, lonely missery
as if they were deserving
of a punishment so severe
for the crime of being born.

  5. What strikes me even more about your poem is that the accompanyhing quote is from Plutarch. The gap between rich and poor isn’t any closer to being closed after two thousand years! Two thousand years!! And he was right. That imbalance spells death to a republic.

  7. Sorrow and hatred well up in my heart, as I watch it getting worse. So much worse. Corruption persists, is even blatant. Control measures are too little and far to late. The gap widens, the queues for bread and handouts lengthen. Cry, the beloved country, indeed.
South Africa. The most unequal country in the world. Let our fury fly.

  10. The injustice of the capitalistic system is that it ravages the vulnerable. It IS infuriating, to say the least! Well-done, Paul!

    • I think I’m boiling over on the sludge that is self interested politics. All that energy and rhetoric around the world and so little to show for it. My heart weeps for the vulnerable.
