“How many passions cling to this wanderer’s sleeves?” Ikkyuu
That Rouge Of Love Amidst the pale blossom wild you were everywhere I looked without looking at all when you appeared in my jolted awareness, where I had been waiting, though not for you or so I thought and here was not the place of my dream, we were not, and yet we were, there, across the bustle of the crowd, inseparable, enjoined by the thread of destiny, that rouge of love. ©Paul Vincent Cannon
I particuarly like “enjoined by the thread of destiny.”

Thank you Liz – have you read about the red thread? Originally a Japanese story.

No, I haven’t. Is there a resource you could point me to?

Yes, there’s some if you use a search engine for – red thread Zen or in some case for the poet Ikkyuu. One source that is consistent across the range of literature is: http://www.hiddenmysteries.org/spirit/ecstacy/redthreadzen.shtml The red thread is incorporated in every religious tradition in variations.

Thank you, Paul. I found some sources. The thought just occurred to me that I’ve been using the metaphor of a red thread being visible from beginning to end to explain unity in writing. I think I’m going to need to find a new metaphor . . .

I’m not sure why you’d choose to do that, so I won’t guess, but i wonder that its universality makes it adaptable anyway?
