De at dVerse has invited us to write a poem about or around mermaids. dVerse Poetics

“The most dangerous creature in all the seas: a mermaid.” (Hook) J.M. Barrie
This Drowning Life Mermaids are very real, not those bare breasted beauties, half fish teasers who tempt sailors to their watery grave with sung promises of seduction offering the world for one single embrace, no, real mermaids are in our midst, teasers of the hight street whose seduction is so complete, they drown us in our own desires. ©Paul Vincent Cannon
Well done Paul! I love the way your poem switches from one meaning to another! Great metaphor for what happens in our world!

Love those last lines, especially. We often drown ourselves, don’t we?

We do and then apportion the blame, thank you De.

Indeed… maybe the sailors just pretended it was a mermaid when in reality it was a hooker in Havanna.

Right on. Our own desires are the ones we are sure to drown in.

How perceptive! This poem made me smile, for some reason, perhaps at the thought a clever someone saw the connection!.

There are so many “s” sounds in this poem, makes it slinky and fills it with sea-water.

Thank for Sarah drawing that out, and that it captured you in that way.

It shocked me Paul when I was seeing the mermaid making a comeback in culture. That is one bad omen.
