“Careful what you tell yourself, especially if you’re stubborn.” Nitya Prakesh
Jack
Jack was a handful
at eighty,
goes sideways a lot
his feet don’t lift the same,
Rosie called appointment time
but old Jack’s mind
played a fifties reel,
he always pushed it late,
Rosie knew that like concrete
Jack was set in his ways.

too many like that even at 18 … tolerance and flexibility make life so much easier 🙂

Yes, though it’s so much worse when the years roll on without change, so sad.

I’ll bet there’s a story behind this poem!

Yes, a bit of a composite of real people, men of a particular mindset/generation. Thank you Liz.

I don’t even know you and you were talking about me. Just keep in mind I am only 70!. Wanted to personally thank you for reading Shinbone Star in general and my last story in particular. Keep reading please. I will visit you as well. My entire experience was in grad school when the university poet in residence was my advisor. His name is Mike Castro. A mystery to me how you conjure it up.

It’s sometimes a surprise when things resonate, out of the blue too. Enjoy your posting, so will indeed keep reading. Is that the same Castro who is the poet laureate of St. Louis?

I like the thought of him being set in his ways even if he goes sideways a lot.

Yes, I thought the paradox worked as wry humour, I really appreciate your picking up on that Frank. Many thanks.

I am SO sorry for this late response. My life has been crazy hectic–but now I’m caught up a bit.
I’m pretty sure I’ve met Jack–and yes, he was a handful. 🙂 But not my grandfather Jack.

Not to stress, life happens and needs to be attended to where energy must go, but thank you for catching up, Jack is someone I have met, and mostly a composite – so not mine either 🙂

Nice work Paul! Some of us are really set in concrete and then there are those of us who think we belong on Mt. Rushmore… set in stone!

Sadly yes, I wish we could change that!
