Solitude/Solitary – RDP Thursday
Photo: One of my favourite places, Jindalee, a true solitude as with many places in the centre.
“The soul that sees beauty may sometimes walk alone.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Where I Am
Can I really bear myself
in silent quarters close,
to shut the door of every noise
allowing my mind to freely wander
and not count the cost of clocks
or the doings of productive minds,
to surrender instead to a
productive nothing,
can I trust the silence that
brings me to myself,
can I be with me,
just me,
for wherever I am,
there solitude waits.

Beautifully penned, Paul. I love the lines especially this ”can I trust the silence that brings me to myself,”

Yes, sometimes we are so certain we can, but silence can undo us. Thank you Winnie

On Mediatation? So difficult to be totally in the present!

Yes, the human struggle, I find it much easier out in the bush.

I always liked solitude, but I fear total disconnection, which can be a danger when you become too much of a recluse.

Yes, there is that side of it., though some have preferred that and have opted for caves and cloisters 🙂

One can! I’m blessed right now with true solitude every day, and couldn’t be happier about it! Poet’s heaven!

Hoping for a divine upgrade at some point to stove and bath, but between those and peace in which to write, I cheerfully choose the latter!

You really know what matters, there is no need to choose, you have chosen the better path already, what a blessing.

I know someone who cannot. This is the first time I’ve heard another express it quite like this. You are a man of much insight, Paul.

Oh how this speaks to me. When I was first sick – confined to bed, with no stimulation – I ended up exactly in this place, and believe me, faced with one’s self and no escape is most uncomfortable – or at least it was for me.

I can so well relate to the thoughts in this poem. I am quite comfortable in my own skin, away from the madding crowd as it were, but idleness is impossible for me. I must always be doing something, if not chores, then reading or writing, walking, folding laundry … something! Beautiful poem, as yours always are.

Thank you Jill, wow, but there is a stillness within the tasks, especially walking, folding, for me gardening is very meditative.

This is true … when I need to clear my head and organize my thoughts, I clean the bathrooms! Mindless, yet necessary work. Or roll smokes … I can roll 5 packs in a half hour, and write an entire blog post in my head during that time!

Well, that’s going the extra mile, very meditative in a creative way too.
