dVerse Poets – Open Link Night 241 – April
Photo: melbournetoday.com
Notably, April is autumn in Australia and is less visually distinct, except for the introduction of deciduous plants which change colour and shed their leaves. In contrast most eucalypts shed all year round, and the only noticeable colouring of autumn is the green grass. But in the northern hemisphere it is spring. April means, following the Latin aperire, to open. I’m going with spring for this poem.
April
She was more than a little shy,
slow to blossom and
reluctant to show,
she clung to the covers of winter
fearing she’d catch cold,
but one warm day she unfurled
her buds so beautiful
limbs slender yet full
her nakedness was
utterly bewitching,
but only for a moment,
what really captivated
was the way she opened
inwardly for everyone
and touched the eyes
of their hearts.

It always seems odd thinking of April being autumnal…

Yes, It is normal now, but when i arrived as a child I came from spring in the UK to autumn here – it was strange. and I can’t get over (even though I know the geography and science of it all) the fact that you are in spring we are in autumn!

That’s the bit that gets me, even though, like you, I understand the why of it.

Thank you, yes I like both, and I trhink autumn is just ahead for me – here they are very similar except for fewer blooms in autumn of course.

When I lived in Canada, despite the creep of winter, autumn was my favourite time of year. The poem is exquisite, and something sensual about it too. (Despite the decades in Australia, I’m still adjusting to a hot Christmas!)

Yes, it is a long transition. I came as a child which was easy enough, but my parents never really adjusted, as with some of my friends.

Beautiful poem! I’m glad it’s spring here and not autumn, for while I love autumn best of all seasons, I do not like what follows.

Good point, I love autumn here, but though our winter is mild, it is still not my fsave season.

Great personification – I hadn’t realised April was to do with opening – I love the way you use that theme to create a young girl, and Spring herself.

Another beautifully written poem. It’s autumn outside here too and the ground is littered with leaves. Nearly 9 years in South Africa, April in autumn still seems so wrong after a lifetime in the UK. Happy Easter!? (and where are the daffodils?) 😉

Thank you Chris, Happy Easter. Yes having one experience is logged in the mind and body, and is not easily changed by new experiences. Yeah, where are the daffodils? 🙂

Well to be truthful, the part of Australia I live in has about six seasons according to the indigenous peoples, all based around wind. Thank you for sharing that.
